EPL commentator & pundit discourse MW1 → MW34

How often football fans mention each commentator or pundit — and whether they speak well or ill of them. 186 taxonomy terms (personalities, plus meta tokens for "commentator", "pundit", on-screen graphics, etc.) matched across every post and reply in 2,681,883 Reddit, X/Twitter and YouTube comments. Every matching post scored by VADER (a lexicon + grammar sentiment model tuned for social-media text) on a −1…+1 compound axis: ≥+0.05 positive, ≤−0.05 negative, in-between neutral. Net sentiment = pos% − neg%.

Taxonomy terms
incl. aliases & nicknames
Caveats. Many terms are ambiguous — "dublin" (city / Dion Dublin), "henry" (Thierry Henry / anyone named Henry), "rio" (Rio Ferdinand / Rio de Janeiro / a car), "keane" (Roy Keane / Robbie Keane / Harry Kane phonetic), etc. Surname-only matches on ex-player pundits also pick up references to their playing days. VADER doesn't understand football context, so sarcasm, banter and emoji-only posts can push scores around. Treat the headline rankings as directional, not forensic.

Top terms by raw occurrences

Total times each taxonomy term appeared across the 2,681,883 posts (top 40 shown). Includes names, nicknames (e.g. carra, wrighty) and meta tokens (commentator, pundit, overlay). Multiple aliases for the same person (e.g. gary neville, neville, gnev) appear as separate rows here — the canonical view is below.

Ranked: commentators by net sentiment

"Favourite" isn't who is mentioned most — it's who carries the most positive balance of sentiment. Top 50 most-mentioned pundits (≥30 scored posts) ranked two ways below.

Sentiment breakdown — top 25 commentators by posts

For each commentator: share of their posts that are positive / neutral / negative, and the net (pos% − neg%). Scored posts only (VADER labels everything; the distribution for a given person is computed from posts that mention them).

Share of commentator chatter — per matchweek

Number of posts per matchweek mentioning each of the top 5 commentators (plus meta "commentator/pundit/graphic" tokens). Good for spotting "which match made people talk about whom" — e.g. a Carragher punditry moment or a Neville hot take on Monday Night Football.

Net sentiment per matchweek — top 5

Weekly net sentiment (pos% − neg%) for each of the five most-mentioned pundits. Dips suggest a bad-take week; spikes suggest they called something right (or everyone's laughing with them).
